The Coalition consists of local, regional, and national organizations, both Native and non-Native, working together to achieve the common goal of promoting financial education in Native communities. Started initially through the U.S. Department of the Treasury in 2000, the now-independent Native Financial Education Coalition is spearheaded by OWEESTA. Elsie Meeks, Executive Director for OWEESTA serves as the chair of the Coalition.
NFEC seeks to exchange information, forge partnerships, identify and develop strategies for outreach and training, and identify gaps in information about financial education needs. Members volunteer their time, technical assistance and financial support to further the goals of the NFEC. OWEESTA currently acts as the fiscal agent and employs part-time coordinator Joanna Donohoe.
